Psychotherapy for Twins in Toronto, ON

I offer psychotherapy for adult twins, in-person in Toronto, ON, and virtually for people across Ontario and beyond.

What is psychotherapy for twins?

Psychotherapy for twins is what it sounds like: psychotherapy that takes this important aspect of your identity into consideration. Being a twin in a singleton’s world can feel isolating and lonely. Our attachment patterns are different than those of singletons, as twins often become each other’s primary attachment figure (rather than a parent). While this can be a special privilege, it can also lead to a world of confusion as we try to find our place in the world as individuals. Becoming an adult and leaving the home of one’s parent(s) is largely natural and normalized (this varies depending on cultural context); the idea of “graduating” from a relationship with a same-aged-sibling is not as straight-forward. This and other aspects of the twin identity will be taken into special consideration in our work together.

What are the benefits of psychotherapy for twins?

As an identical twin myself, I have first-hand knowledge of how this unique relationship and identity can impact a person’s experience of being. I will neither glorify your twinship nor dismiss its importance to your sense of identity; I will not treat it as just another sibling dynamic. There are many aspects of being a twin that are misunderstood by singletons, including but not limited to: ambiguous grief, identity confusion, insecure or disorganized attachment, codependency, care-taking, people-pleasing, enmeshment and fear of abandonment. Working with a therapist who shares aspects of your unique experience can help you to feel understood.

My approach to psychotherapy for twins

As a psychodynamic psychotherapist, I approach all client relationships with curiosity, whether with twins or with singletons. I appreciate that every person’s experience of being in the world is unique, and it is my job to help us understand and articulate the particularities of your experience. In a nutshell, psychodynamic psychotherapy aims to uncover what is hidden in order to move what is stuck. The goal is to dissolve the barriers that block us from our vitality. For twins, this process can be particular and unique; it may be automatic to keep parts of yourself hidden for the sake of protecting your connection to your sibling. We may feel threatened either by our own pull towards self-discovery, or by our twin’s. Together, we will seek to understand the particularities of you, the individual, while holding reverence for the ways that this may be complicated by your twinship.
